Telefónica launches Thinking Things and involved fully in the Internet of Things

Hoy hemos asistido a la presentación de Thinking Things, una solución comercial de Telefónica que parte de Telefónica I+D y que representa una apuesta clara por la Internet de las Cosas. La modularidad y el protagonismo de la conectividad celular -frente a alternativas centradas en WiFi- son las claves de esta aproximación.
Francisco Jariego, Carlos de Otto y Javier Zorzano nos dieron los detalles de esta nueva iniciativa que quiera poner a Telefónica en ese mapa aún por trazar en el que las soluciones de ese mundo totalmente conectado tengan en cuenta este nuevo concepto de la multinacional española.
La solución base que ha empezado a comercializar Telefónica consiste en un 'pack ambiental' compuesto de tres módulos: el módulo de batería que alimenta al resto de componentes, el módulo core -que entre otras cosas es básico por su gestión de la conectividad 2G, barata e ideal para estos escenarios- y el módulo con los sensores de temperatura y humedad.
Estos módulos trabajan de forma conjunta y a su vez se pueden combinar con otros módulos aún en desarrollo -pronto estarán disponibles los que permiten geolocalizar esos módulos, disponer de un sensor de presencia, o contar con un singular sistema de notificaciones de luz y sonido.
La espina dorsal de un proyecto para makers
La potencia de estas soluciones no está tanto en esa base que ofrece Telefónica para empezar a 'juguetear', sino más bien en toda la plataforma que ha puesto en marcha tanto a nivel de diseños de referencia hardware como a nivel de las APIs disponibles para interactuar con todo el sistema.
Como nos contaba Francisco Jariego, en realidad la idea es atraer a desarrolladores y empresas dispuestas a aprovechar esa base y ese componente de conectividad que Telefónica brinda para desarrollar soluciones a problemas concretos que esos usuarios o empresas tengan en su día a día. De hecho, a la solución comercial para usuarios finales se le suma otra que se caracteriza por un factor de forma mucho más crudo -al estilo de las Raspberry Pi Compute Module- pero también más interesante para empresas dispuestas a crear sus propios diseños hardware utilizando como base las soluciones de Telefónica I+D.
La modularidad -constantemente comparaban su implementación con la filosofía del juego LEGO- de estas soluciones es precisamente clave para crecer en prestaciones de formas prácticamente ilimitadas, y Telefónica se posiciona así con una solución que puede simplificar mucho esa primera parte del trabajo de la puesta en marcha de soluciones específicas y concretas.
Este pack básico se puede adquirir en la tienda de Thinking Things de Telefónica por un precio de 90 euros, y en ese coste se incluye un año de conectividad que permite consultar y gestionar nuestros módulos Thinking Things a través de una sencilla interfaz web que podremos tanto dejar en manos de Telefónica como instalar en nuestros propios servidores. Eso sí: la idea es que esas prestaciones básicas que ofrece la interfaz sean solo un pequeño apunte de lo que se puede lograr aprovechando las APIs y documentación disponibles para sacar todo el partido a estas soluciones.
